I think I always loved being in the water. In childhood it manifested through staying way too long in the bath (sometimes using this to avoid guests on Sunday evenings lol) or refusing to go out of the sea during summer holidays. I think my parents did not enjoy it as much as I did. In adulthood it manifested in me taking a shower every time the day gets too overwhelming. Didn’t occur to me until this year (the internet helped and definitely being on an island surrounded my ocean enthusiasts) that I can be underwater and explore the marine life by using my own breath, or better say, by not using my breath. Since I am not the biggest fan of scuba, apnea seemed like the perfect fit for me. The funny thing is that I though that holding your breath is the hard part in this process, only to discover that is the equalisation. My first class was nothing less than amazing, having a great instructor (which happens to be a former coach of the belgian free diving athletic team). A lot of the focus was on breathing techniques and being able to relax, control your mind and focus. The practical part was not as calm as the wind and the waves made it a bit challenging. The pain in my ears when not managing to equalise properly did not help either nor did the cold water. I am very curious also to try it in a more warmer and still water. While my ears are not as happy as me to discover a new hobby, I cannot wait to do my next dives. 🪼
